A summertime memory…

“SARAH!” My dad screamed from the back porch. “You have to come see
this!” The excitement in his voice was odd. There was something in it
I couldn’t read, a tone I didn’t know how to respond to.

I jumped up from the chair I had been lounging in in the front of the
house and hurried to the kitchen. As I approached the back door, I saw
it too.

“Whoa…” I stood in disbelief. I was completely still for a good
30-seconds as I looked out into my back yard. Was I standing in the
midst of a horrific accident? “Did it just crash?” I asked my father.

“It didn’t crash. I think everyone is ok. Maybe it just needed to
land.” I didn’t know if he was lying to be nice or if he really meant
what he was saying.

It was as if a rainbow melted into a pool of sprawled out fabric in my
back yard. A huge hot air balloon lay tangled and deflated. Its
massive colorful balloon was sprawled out in disarray. A man and woman
stood with their backs facing my house looking over the disorganized
mess. Their hands rested on their hips as they searched for damage.
The man scratched his head, looking a bit frazzled and began tugging
on the fabric.

“We better go out there.” My father suggested. I followed him off the
top deck. Together we climbed down to the lower porch and began the
short walk to the balloon.

“Hey there. Everything all right?” My dad asked. Asa he approached the
couple from behind. “Need a hand?”

“Hey! We're sorry about this.” The man paused. He needed a second to
collect his thoughts. “We were dropping and needed somewhere quick.
This was the best we could do.”

“No problem. Everyone’s ok?” My dad, though he watered his lawn every
week, didn’t care about stuff like that. He just wanted to make sure
the hot air balloon’s riders were safe.

“Oh yea. We are ok. We are going to get out of your hair as soon as
possible. I know there is a small baseball sized hole somewhere about
25 feet from the center point. I’ll need to get this mess straightened
out, patch the tear and then we’ll be on our way. “

“Can I help?” I asked ready to get this hot air balloon working again.
At that moment, I realized all our neighbors were either walking
towards us or standing staring out their back doors at the giant
balloon that had emergency landed. Within a minute we had a group of
35 people readying and willing to help.

All of my friends were out in my back yard, shoeless, most in their
bathing suits, working together to move sections of the balloon. The
adults took direction from the man who operated the balloon to
straighten out the wires and strings that connected the balloon to the
basket. We did as the adults asked us and we were happy to help. Soon
the balloon was starting to take on an actual balloon shape. It now
had some order and we could tell the balloon was red with strips of
yellow, blue, orange, green, and purple that went all around. It was
one of the biggest things I thought I had ever seen. Finally, the man
was able to locate the hole and patched it up without any difficulties
in just a matter of minutes.

The only thing left to fill up the giant balloon with the hot air and
get the basket of the balloon up straight off its side.

The adults made us children go sit away from the balloon and watch as
the air slooooooowly began to pump into the balloon. It seemed to take
forever for the giant thing to fill up. It was so beautiful though. I
watched as it swayed in the wind from one side to the other. The woman
sat manning the air as the man was controlling a rope that lead down
from the tip top of the balloon. I wasn’t sure what the rope was
doing. I imagined he was just trying to keep it from flipping or
shifting to one side or the other.

After what seemed like an eternity of waiting, the balloon basket was
upright and the balloon was just about straight in the air. The man
ran around and hoped into the basket with the woman. We cheered as the
balloon slowly began to rise of the ground. The parents ran over to
give quick handshakes and a “It was nice meeting you! Safe travels”
goodbye.

We stayed with our heads thrown back and watched as the balloon
floated up and away in the breeze. We waved until we could no longer
feel our arms. Soon, the balloon was out of sight and our balloon
adventure had come to an end. I went to bed that night replaying the
day’s events over and over. Who would have thought a hot air balloon
would emergency land in their backyard today? I never expected
anything like that happening. Not even in my wildest dreams. I feel
asleep thinking about how when I grew up I wanted to be an explorer—an
explorer of the untamed winds above in my very own giant hot air
balloon.

Many a times it was played,

Kicked around

The object of anger, broken desires

Or just plain boredom

It helped soothe fears,

It’s rattling, triumphing

The noise in their heads

The tin can but always

Left behind, as they stride ahead

Jealous of all who move around

But innocence of her glance

Laughs at the life she was offered

But never do her eyes bleed
